Malaysia crime: security guard robs jewelry shop in Kuala Lumpur

One week after a security guard in Malaysia’s Subang Jaya city allegedly killed a bank officer and escaped with the bank’s money, another security guard has robbed a goldsmith shop in Kuala Lumpur, local media reported.

According to the New Straits Times, the robbery took place on Thursday at the Festival City mall in Sepatak suburb at around 9 a.m.

The jewelry store owner and three staff members were arranging jewelry in a glass display counter when the store security guard, who started working at the shop a month earlier, threatened them with a gun, the New Straits Times reported.

The owner and employees gave the suspect a tray of jewelry, then were told to squat down and keep quiet, before he escaped the scene.

Police have yet to determine the value of the stolen jewelry.

The suspect is believed to have used a fake identity card to gain employment at the store.

According to the New Straits Times, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said it was possible that the security guard had gotten the idea to rob the jewelry shop from the incident in Subang Java last week.

The inspector also urged all security companies in the country to vet their personnel and contact the police if any suspicion was raised.

Police are also checking if the gun used in the robbery was provided by the security firm or was privately owned by the suspect, and said they will check his details with the National Registration Department and watch CCTV camera recordings.
